Antigone by Sophocles (DRAMA 1200/2200 Performance Class)
Antigone (ann-TIG-e-nee) by Sophocles – Presented by Northwestern Polytechnic Drama 1200/2200 Performance Class
Translated from Ancient Greek by Dudley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald.
Antigone, a tragedy by Sophocles, explores the conflict between divine law and human law, as well as the complex interplay of loyalty, power, and fate.
Through the unfolding drama, Antigone challenges notions of justice, duty, and the role of the individual in society. Creon’s rigid rule and Antigone’s unwavering conviction set the stage for inevitable tragedy. the stark simplicity of the performance mirrors the stripped-down essence of the play–its themes of moral struggle and the inevitable clash of personal conviction against authority.
Performed by the students of Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP), Drama 1200/2200, this minimalistic production will focus on the raw emotion and tension between the characters, brought to life with bare bones staging and minimal lighting, allowing the power of Sophocles’ timeless drama to shine through.
